  1. Hello all Happy Gardeners out there!

At last! Garden season is here! We did have a June meeting of the Garden Club -- on the 15th, at Suzanne's house. Great apps and a great location. We talked about the Farmer's Market and of course since then, we he held the first Farmer's Market in Hayden. It was a resounding success (thanks Suzanne) and we can only hope to maintain the momentum for the next few weeks. Suzanne is gone for the next two Friday's, and Ann D. said she would be the Manager this Friday (6/26) and Eva volunteered to manage on Friday, July 3rd.

I didn't do a very good job of taking notes, but Suzanne said that she obtained a sales tax license for the Farmer's Market in the name of "Garden Co-op", the intention being that anyone can bring things to sell at the Co-op booth if you don't have enough "stuff" to warrant your own booth. If you'd like to sell something at the Co-op booth, then the rule is you also get to manage the market one Friday. Such a deal -- you'll be there anyway!

Other things which were discussed: Jill Murphy has some white pine trees which she would like to trade (sorry, no contact information). If you wish to participate in the Hayden Chamber's "Garden of the Month" competition, you must sign up. There was a reminder about the EDC meeting which was to be held the following night, and Tammie has e-mailed everyone about that since.

I had to leave the meeting early and did not get details about next month's meeting. I think it will be at Festus's house, but not sure of date or location.

Hope to see everyone again at this Friday's Farmer's market and Ann, I am glad to help get the word out, make flyers, etc., if you will let me know.

  2. Attention Locovores This is the time of year when we see lots of fresh, Colorado grown fruits and vegetables. For our state, this translates to total demand of over $2.6 billion for fresh fruits and vegetables, and although many of these products cannot be grown (or available year round), even a share of these sales would represent a significant part of the state's agriculture and growth in the $310 million currently sold in Colorado. At the same time, the way some consumers shop for fresh produce is changing. In Colorado, producers currently sell about 5% of their fruits and vegetables directly to consumers (far greater than the 0.4% nationwide), and this number is as great as 50% in Boulder County. CSU studies suggest that the demand for local fruits and vegetables could be as much as 10 times greater, if supplies were available.
